The Beast of Beauty
P R O L O G U E
Hot.
Flames tickled the midnight heavens as they licked from a burning village, the echoing cries of remorse hot within listening ears. A cheek smooth against the cold earth just outside the grasping reaches of the charred dismay, the fire spit malice upon the naked backs of babes, engulfing those less fortunate to escape its heated embrace. And though the fire did not reach the forest, rage boiled within the veins of a youth, his blood smeared across his person, his very existence sore from the beatings.
Silent, he could only watch as the wooden skeletons of his village collapsed upon themselves, the great timber groaning by the burdened weight of the flames. The wails escalated as they pierced the air, torn and tormented with each lashing of fire upon their skin. There lay lives trapped within, and the youth’s beating heart stolen with them.
Those who had escaped the timely death sobbed as they fell to their knees in relief, and perhaps regret for those they had left behind; the outstretched fingers of their neighbors, siblings and children now a ghost of a brush against their own. They had murdered in the name of their own life.
A mere shell upon this battlefield, eyes naked to the carnage watched as their home, too, became victim to the fire.
All that ever was would forever be a figment of his memory.
